Introduction
Since it was formed in 1902, AAA has actively represented the interests of motorists and other travelers.

By 1903, the American Automobile Association was fighting unfair traffic laws and campaigning for better roads. That same year, AAA supported federal legislation that established what is now known as the U.S. Department of Transportation. A few years later, AAA pushed for route signs on U.S. highways.

In 1905, AAA published the first road maps. And by 1915, the association established another first — the Roadside Assistance program.

For more than 75 years, AAA has supported the School Safety Patrol Program, which instills in students a sense of responsibility and leadership as they protect the lives of their classmates.

AAA's list of accomplishments as the "travelers' champion" is lengthy. Our commitment to providing safety, security and peace of mind to AAA members — now more than 50 million strong — never changes.

Everything we do — every product we offer, every service we deliver, every public safety initiative we stand behind – is based on AAA's Basic Beliefs, which states: "We will be good corporate neighbors, engaging in public service consistent with our mission, the needs of members, the communities we serve and the national interest."

We will continue to press for safer roads and vehicles, better-educated drivers, fair taxes and other issues that affect members and the public.

From our school safety patrol and driver education programs — both pioneered by AAA – to ensuring motorist taxes are spent the way they were intended, our members and the traveling public rely on us to act in their behalf.

While we are engaged in rapid change, one goal we must never lose sight of is the need to continue serving our members — as well as the traveling public.

AAA's long line of distinguished public service programs listed here represent the association's commitment to do just that.
